Up in the Air

Guess where I am right now?  I am in the air on my way to KEY FRIGGIN WEST!!!!

20160115_094626We’ve been planning this trip since last March and it is finally here!!  Sam and I got up early this morning and headed to the airport.  We will stop in Ft. Lauderdale and then drive down to .  Crystal and Ashlee will be joining us in Key West later tonight.  I hope to have a very exciting update for you after the weekend with lots of pictures to share.  Let’s catch up a little bit.

Last Friday, I had physical therapy again during my lunch break.  I was excited to tell my therapist that the run went well last week.  She decided not to put me on the treadmill again since I had just ran a mile the night before, but she did tell me that I could try to run another mile again over the weekend.  She also gave me the green light to head back to body pump.  She wants me to hold off on adding weights to the squat/lunge tracks, but hey, it’s a start!!

After thinking about it a bit, I realized that although I have successfully ran a mile, I was nowhere near ready for 13.1 miles.  The most I had been walking at a time was 2 miles plus whatever distance I walked while Christmas shopping and walking around DC.  I decided that although I would have loved to run another mile, I was more curious to see how my body would handle walking more significant mileage.  On Saturday morning, I decided that I should try to walk 6 miles.  I called Crystal to see if she wanted to join me and luckily for me she had just enough time to walk with me.  We met up in a parking lot and hit the pavement.  Our main concern was whether we would be able to keep up the required pace so that we don’t get kicked off the course.  The cutoff time for the Key West course is 4 hours, which allows us to walk up to an 18 minute pace.  We had no trouble keeping that pace!  Even with the crosswalk stops, we were well under the limit.  We were also able to complete the 6 miles fairly easily.  I could feel a slight tenderness in my leg/hip, but overall I was pleasantly surprised.  Steven was out running a 10 miler so we passed each other along the way.  Go Stevie B!

On Sunday, we had a football gathering at the house to watch the Redskins play the Packers in the playoffs.  Unfortunately, my skins lost the game, but we still had a lot of fun and ate a lot of good food.  (I’m having a tough time uploading pictures while I’m on this flight, but I will share later)

Speaking of food, I tried a couple of healthy oatmeal recipes over the weekend.  I really want to get the family in the habit of eating healthier.  So far, my attempts have not been appreciated and I seem to be the only person (semi) enjoying them.

I decided to take it easy the rest of the week (other than physical therapy on Monday evening).  I don’t want to push myself too hard too fast and I certainly don’t want to be too sore to walk the Key West course.

Key West…Here we come 🙂

Keep it up, champ. You need to share the oatmeal recipes with me. I love a good oatmeal snack before a workout.
